I can’t imagine for a minute why anyone would feel that putting a child’s life in danger would be acceptable, so why on earth would anyone consider removing a facility that keeps them safe? When a child like my daughter Isla is surviving cancer, it has taken her every breath to get there but if she had been left to breathe on her own then she wouldn’t have reached 12 years old. Isla and every member of her family and friends were helped by The Royal Marsden Children’s Unit during her treatment.
The experience from the unit is much more than administering chemotherapy. It involves help physically and mentally for each individual concerned and the comfort that is gained from such help is a necessity for success. We needed all the help we could get in keeping Isla alive, we are so grateful and so lucky. Knowing that we still have such a place to return to if ever needed, knowing that they will continue to keep an eye on Isla as she grows up is exactly what every family that goes through cancer needs. To cope with cancer, this comfort should never be taken away.
